AutoIt
You should have some programming experience/knowledge to get the most out of this, but at the same time it is a nice way to start playing with programming.
In no time, you have made a script that is actually doing something useful!
There is a customized editor included, and you can even make standalone .exe programs.

Do it again, Sam!
As the developers (spacetornado) puts it:
"Do It Again is a free and simple program that allows you to make your computer automatically perform a task for you, whenever you want."
Sometimes handsfree computing is what you need.
Try to macro that Facebook game overnight!
There are other, more sophisticated programs, and even simpler ones.

LanTopology?
How cool is that?
I remember the functionallity in some old (pre M$) version of Visio, but haven't found it later.
This software can be very useful for network administrators on a budget, or just as a quickfire LAN scanner.
It uses SNMP, but also ICMP(ping), and even has a web interface, monitoring/alerting functionality.
Not at all a bad piece of freeware, although the interface feels a bit unpolished.
Maybe we'll see some nice export features in the next version?

Simplified Universal Player Encoder & Renderer.
It IS SUPER.
In my opinion, VLC is super too, but this isn't just super, it is SUPER.
Their website is not that super, (here) but that shouldn't matter.
This is what they say:
SUPER © "The Player" surpasses any known player by supporting just
any Multimedia file format. SUPER © plays files that cannot be played with
WMP or even other libavcodec-based players like MPC and VLC.
SUPER © also plays and saves Internet Media Streams of different
protocols ( mms:// rtsp:// http://)
SUPER © "The Encoder" is the fastest and simplest tool to encode full
length movies to any other format without any time or function limitation.

FTP what was that now?
Now, it still is all that for some of us, but I guess its more used as convenient way to communicate with webserver hosts to get those updates online.
Anyhows, I have been using only one (Windows) FTP software for the last say 8 years, and that is FileZilla.
They have both a server and a client version, they are feature rich, and most don't need anything more.

Alright, i have this myfavoritegame.iso file - what now?
Great! Now you have a copy on your hard drive, so now you just need to burn it on a blank cd.
Or do you?
With Daemon tools you can mount them just as they were a physical cd/dvd drive.
This is what they say over at www.daemon-tools.cc :
--------------------------------------------------------
DAEMON Tools is an advanced application for Microsoft Windows which provides one of the best optical media emulation in the industry.
With DAEMON Tools you can back up your physical CD/DVD/HD DVD/Blu-ray discs into “virtual discs” or so called “disc image” files, which run directly on your hard drive. You can also work with images created by other burning programs! DAEMON Tools supports variety of image types. Use CD/DVD image converter to have one format images in your Image Catalog!
A virtual disc has much better access rates than a physical one in a corresponding physical drive because the reading speed of a virtual CD/DVD/HD DVD/Blu-ray-ROM is 50x faster compared to normal drive.
With DAEMON Tools you would receive up to 32 virtual SCSI drives and 2 virtual IDE drives that behave just like the “real” physical ones.
No more CD/DVD drive noise. No waiting for disc loading. No need to buy external optical drive for your netbook. DAEMON Tools enables you to use your CD/DVD images as if they were already burned to CD/DVD.
---------------------------------------------------
There are 3 versions, the "Lite" is free, and most likely is more than enough for you needs.
Be semi concious during the installation - there are some nagware wanting to be added to your browsers.
Download it here: http://www.daemon-tools.cc/eng/downloads

Sysinternals wrap
Now, a few years ago, Microsoft bought the tools, and have made a nice little suite of it.
Creds to the Sysinternals themselves, as written on the MS sysinternals site:
The Sysinternals web site was created in 1996 by Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell to host their advanced system utilities and technical information. Microsoft acquired Sysinternals in July, 2006. Whether you’re an IT Pro or a developer, you’ll find Sysinternals utilities to help you manage, troubleshoot and diagnose your Windows systems and applications.
So, what is it, in details?
"The Sysinternals Troubleshooting Utilities have been rolled up into a single Suite of tools. This file contains the individual troubleshooting tools and help files. It does not contain non-troubleshooting tools like the BSOD Screen Saver or NotMyFault."
It is loads of small system utilities that may come in handy.
In my opinion, NotMyFault can be a great troubleshooting tool...
So the suite consists of this:
(and can be downloaded from here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb842062.aspx )

I am talking about QtWeb, a webkit based browser.
As they put it:
QtWeb is a lightweight, secure and portable browser having unique user interface and privacy features. QtWeb is an open source project based on Nokia's Qt framework and Apple's WebKit rendering engine (the same as being used in Apple Safari and Google Chrome).

Can you zoom in on that image?
Take that crappy lo-res surveillance image, and zoom in to the details.
Or what about that nice piece of 10000$ art you can't afford, but want to print, but it's just not detailed enough.
A nice piece of hi-tec freeware. 10/10 in my book!

Grown out of your Notepad?
That is probably its only real strength too.
If you want a bit more, but don't want to have an editor cluttered with all kinds of functionallity you'll never need, or have something to grow in?
Give Notepad++ a try!
It has a lot of features, but they don't jump you like a paperclip genie in a word processor.
Well.. I am not feeling too well today, probably swineflu or just some bad food, nothing fatal, so all you get is a link to the developers website.

The evergreen mediaplayer - Winamp
I haven't looked into the whole story about Nullsoft, but according to me, it was a dude that had some mp3's, a Windows computer, some mad skills, and wanted to use the mp3 files in a convenient way.
So... Winamp was born!
It started out good, and soon was the most popular mp3 player on the windows platform. It has evolved, and then gone back to its roots, and is now a solid, userfriendly mediaplayer, maybe somewhat bloated and resource hogging, but still one of the very best in its class.
Some people still swear to the 2.x versions, even the newest version is at 5.56
K, the newest version you get from somewhere near http://www.winamp.com.
You can supersize it with all kinds of whistles and bells, and possibly hog the most powerful cpu ever made if you plug it all in.
If you want to check out the good ole 2.95, which probably would run on your cellphone with no effort if you just could install it, try:
http://www.oldversion.com/Winamp.html
http://www.winampheaven.net
http://www.oldapps.com/winamp.php?old_winamp=140
or Just frigging google it, like i did!
Thats it for today, or... I'm lagging behind already.
Need to get up to speed anytime soon, I feel!

Time to make your Windows CCleaner
CCleaner removes unused files, cleans up your browser cache, and even fixes your registry.
On a cluttered pc, you can clearly notice the difference.
The effect is almost exactly, but not quite entirely like this authentic real-life truthinesswitness before&after picture clearly shows:

Seriously, if you haven't heard about CCleaner, give it a try - it's worth it.
The developers puts it like this:
CCleaner is a freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner. But the best part is that it's fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware! :)
Download it here:

Cheers!
